EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
Our Educational Program has two main goals: to provide conferences and training for healthcare professionals and community members, and to educate 2nd grade students about different types of disabilities.
In the future, we will host ongoing professional development opportunities, first-aid training, CPR classes and other medical/educational conferences for parents and community members.
EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
RYAN'S RECESS
Ryan’s Recess is an educational program designed to raise awareness about disabilities among second graders. Created by Leonora Collins and Michelle Hill, it was inspired by Leonora’s son, Ryan, who faced bullying due to developmental challenges caused by a brain defect.
Program Components
The program includes hands-on learning experiences, such as navigating obstacle courses with pediatric wheelchairs, simulating visual impairments with special goggles, and experiencing sensory challenges. These activities will take place both in the classroom and at the Empower Me Center.
Expansion Plans
After launching in the Lebanon Special School District in the 2024-25 school year, Ryan’s Recess will expand to schools across Middle Tennessee in 2025-26. Preparatory sessions for educators and parents will be offered to ensure broad support for inclusivity.
Learning Objectives
Aligned with Tennessee State Standards, the program teaches respect, empathy, and an understanding of disabilities. Students will learn about the impact of disabilities on daily life and the importance of inclusion.
Core Values
Ryan’s Recess promotes the acceptance of differences with the mottos: “Everyone is made different, and being different is okay!” and “Everyone has a special gift to give this world!” The goal is to instill comfort and familiarity among second graders with a variety of different types of disabilities so they will want to INVITE others to participate, know how to INCLUDE them in activities, and IMPACT their lives in a positive way.
